, that friday afternoon bombshell. david petraeus resigns at the cia after the fbi uncovers his extramarital affair. pierre thomas is here with the latest. first came upon this several months ago. >> yes, it came to light after a woman in tampa tied to military got a peculiar, harassing e-mail. the woman was so concerned, she contacted the fbi, who, then, according to our sources, traced it back to paula broadwell, who wrote a book about petraeus. as the fbi continued to investigate, they discovered e-mails pointing to a romantic, sexual relationship between the two. early concerns about the e-mails being hacked. but the investigation never turned up evidence of national security being compromised. but what did find was lots of human drama. >> what more do they have to investigate now and why wasn't the white house told until this week? >> the fbi investigation is largely done and the early evidence is that there will not be criminal charges. again, sources say that this deinvolved into a personal matter. petraeus had been confronted in the last couple of weeks, as for the timing of the disc

to the consulate, went to the cia annex. they found a draft of two letters. and letters that they have no idea thisf they were ever, ever sent anywhere. but a draft of two letters that the fbi never picked up when they were there. and two draft, talk about this fact that that day, they saw some member of the bolivian police force across the street in the upstairs, taking pictures inside the compound and they were worried and concerned. why that evidence was not seized by the fbi, i don't know. another thing that happened, david ignatius of the washington post, met with the cia. the cia gave them a timeline as to what happened. this is what is new for me. number 1, it appears that the last two who were killed were not killed until about 5:00 hirt in the morning, which fwaifs another hour for the -- which gives another hour for the united states to take military action. but secondly, let me read this to you, senator, this is david ignatyus. at 4:30 a.m., the first idea of some of the cia reinforcements was to go to a benghazi hospital to recover steven who is they rightly suspected was already d

petraeus of the c.i.a. we are hearing new reaction from top officials in washington, d.c. today. nbc news white house correspondent mike viquiera joining me live now. vic, what are we learning today? >> there's a lot of back and forth and a lot of it has to do not only with the shocking incident that came to light late friday afternoon and the fallout on capitol hill. there are some angry members of both the house and senate on the intelligence committee as it relates to the whole benghazi investigation. let's go through the timeline quickly, shall we? >> james clapper, who was nominally the head of, the boss of the collector of central intelligence, until friday, that was david petraeus, learned about this investigation into these emails that were described as harassing emails that were sent from paula broadwell to another woman. he learned about them on election day, on tuesday. on wednesday, he notified the white house. on thursday morning, the national security adviser, tom donovan, made the president aware, general petraeus was here, the former general, retired general, was here on t

line. the state department put out a time line. the cia put out a time line or its version of events during attacks and in the aftermath. but what we don't have a good sense of is where the president of the united states was from minute to minute. i think the republicans will insist on that and i think they should. bill: he said he issues his directives immediately after the attack and during attack. where does that take you? where do you end up? >> that's the key question. when the president of the united states issues a directive, everybody flies into action. the military records what he told them to do, what they have been instructed to do and from that follows a series of steps and people execute his directives. we need to know what the directive was, who it was given to what they did with it. the president said he instructed every bit of help be provided to the people on the ground there. we know that didn't happen. we need a better accounting of why that didn't happen if the president said it should have. bill: there is a statement today at 1:00. i'm not sure there will be ques

president obama of the investigation of the c.i.a.? >> i would say that with regard to that issue, what we did was conduct the investigation in the way that we normally conduct criminal investigations. we do so in a way that -- so they can be seen as being done in an impartial way. we follow the facts. we do not share outside the justice department, outside the f.b.i., the facts of ongoing investigations. we made the determines as we were going through the matter that there was not a threat to national security. had we made the determination that a threat to national security existed we would, of course, have made that known to the president and also to appropriate members on the hill. but as we went through the investigation, looked at the facts and tried to examine them as they developed, we felt very secure in the knowledge that a national security threat did not exist that warranted the sharing of that information with the white house or with the hill. but when we got to a point in the investigation, it was very late in the investigation after a very critical interview occurred on the
